ESC Students,

People in Indonesia thought that teaching English is very difficult. Why?

1. The subject doesn't match with kid's needs

2. The teacher/ instructor doesn't know how to create such a good and fun teaching, thus the students will feel bored due to the lesson.

3. The classroom situation will give the students un-enjoy with the lesson

In ESC, I tried to develop some strategies to answer the above questions. With little numbers of students, the learning time will be more effective. 

At today's lesson, I taught four students in the lesson with the theme "In the Kitchen". They learnt some nouns, verbs, and activities regarding in the kitchen.

What did they do?     They made a sandwich based on simple English instructions given by the instructor. 

They enjoyed while learning English in very different ways.

While to introduce ESC English Speaking  Corner to public, ESC contributes an activity of SMANSA related their 71th anniversary .

The Days In USA

 

Batam , March 1998     

The day when my manager called me was an unforgettable moment. He called me for some interviews regarding my working performance in His office . My cool sweat drooped on to my face when Mr Lee Peng Soon delivered some questions. At first I didn't know much about the reason why he called me at that day. At the end of interview, He told me that I would  be involved  for a project in USA !  WHAT.... USA ?!!  I shouted in my heart .

After that day , seems like my days was like an night dreaming everyday. I joint with that Company was almost three years. I was one of QA member in Natsteel Electronic Batam . My badge number is 1042 . The QA  Departement is in charge to control the product quality of computer. Natsteel has central office in USA, and it also has many branches in the entire of the world including Batam Indonesia . The company did many computer, printer, accounting calculator, blue tooth and etc from some very famous brand, such as Apple, Hewlett Packard, Epson. Having chance to be selected as best employee is kind of magic thing in my life. I was selected with another two employee from different department. My friends who were selected are Vina from Production department, and Elpi from ME. 

Silicon Valley, USA,  July 15th 1998

    After flew for 18 hours, Singapore Airlines landed safely in San Francisco International Airport. The sun has set when I left the plane. The cool wind breeze on to my face. The situation looked strange, once I saw around my self. Many people stood in the line for their  much much bigger luggage ! . Some faces were from China, India,  Caucasian, and South East. After we got our luggage, we straight go to someone who already wait for us. There were two men waited for me, Vina, Elpi, and Alex Yeo ( Natsteel Singapore) . The first surprise ...... those two men were waited for us with the limousine !! It was the first time in my life saw a Limo, and also the first time for me rid the Limo too.. of course ! :)  

Along the way from Airport to a motel, we only saw the empty highway with rarely vehicles. It made us feel bored. The imagination about how bright USA seems like not real, because along the highway there were bushes only in the right and left side. After three hours on the Limo we arrived in a very ordinary motel . The motel was located close the main road. The shape of motel is U letter . We just started to sleep when someone knocked the door. I peeped from the door, a strange Tamil man stood in front of us. Then I asked him his propose. We felt afraid about him, Hollywood film had inspired us to be careful from strange in USA. 

The most challenge when we were in USA is food. The food found in San Francisco almost all are Western food. Luckily we found Asian Restaurant which provide fried rice. I think western food is less season and less salt. We went to seafood restaurant to order some drill fish.In the fact the fish seems like no salt and no garlic as I felt in Indonesia !.. But is okey, because we found French Fries :)

The problem of food was overcome when we move to Holiday Inn Hotel. It provided a private kitchen for us to cook our own food. Alex Yeo brought us to supermarket for buying  rice, egg, vegetables, salt, and etc. The time we enjoyed our TUMIS KANGKUNG in USA is the best time for us. 

Natsteel Electronic was located in Silicon Valley. It is the place where many big electronic companies were located. The working time in Natsteel USA was arranged in the day and  night shift. The company was not so crowded like Natsteel Batam. We worked with some Mexican and Vietnam people. I seldom saw local people worked in company, only one supervisor who I identified as USA people. A security asked me, where we from.When we said that we were from Indonesia, the security looked surprised. He didn't know about Indonesia at all., he just know about Bali .

We visited some places in California. First we visited Golden Bridge in San Francisco. We enjoyed some food along the river close to Al Catraz . Many food stall were displayed their food attractively.

They Performed an Introduction in very relax and Fun Situation

         It is universally acknowledge that teaching English for young Learners is an essential foundation to the higher level of education. However, there is no specific major which proposed to English for Young Learners. Thus, every EYL's teacher must know the principle of TEYL ( teaching English for Young Learners) . According to Douglas Brown in his book " Teaching by Priciples an Interactive Approach to Language Pedagogy " there are five aspects which must be obtained by EYL's teacher. 

Those five aspects are : intellectual development, attention span, sensory input, affected factor, and authentic language.

Refer to the above theory, my class today performed an interesting conversation between teacher-students , between student and student. The purposed of this activity is to aroused the attention span during the teaching and learning. The class mustn't be dominated by the teacher, each of them must have chance to speak !!. 

This opportunity is important to build the confidence, to maintain the attention, to encourage the conversation, and to give them experience on how to apply the sentences in a simple conversation.

Thus, to achieve the goal, I provided two questions ( in previous meeting, I shared two questions asking name and age) 

1. What do you want to be?
2. What do you like ? ( in order to get the answer I provided some flashcards, kids picked two  pictures, hence they would state which one they like and which one they don't like)

Each student has opportunity to be asked and ask. It is very important to make them familiar with the words and the pronunciation.  In every meeting, I used warm up classroom with the song from Mike's Home video on You tube "Hello, how are you "??  .. check it out , they looked happy and fun. At the end of the two hours learning, the kids had already sufficient confidence to perform them self in front of their friends.
